| Birth | Peter McLoughlin was born circa 1865 at Co Leitrim, Ireland. The first trace found of Peter was when he was named as the informant of the death of his father Thomas in 1882. It am not aware of statutory requirement regarding the age of informants, but I would guess that only a relatively responsible individual would be an acceptable informant. On this basis I would speculate that by 1882 Peter was 15 or older and so born no later than 1867. We next encounter him on the 1901 Census return of his mother's household - see Figure 20, Page 34. Here he is listed as the first of her resident children, with a stated age of 32. Again it was more usual for children to be listed in descending age order. Perhaps it is significant that the next child, Cornelius is shown with an age of 38. But we know that Cornelius, or Conor as he was baptised, was born in 1869 and was thus aged 32 in 1901. Bearing in mind that the completion of forms was not, in 1901, the everyday occurrence it is now, is it possible that his mother, who completed the census return, simply mixed up the ages of her children when entering the information? If that was the case, then perhaps Peter should have been listed as being aged 38, that giving an implied birth year of 1863. On the 1911 Census Peter, who completed the form himself, gives his age as 43 and the age of his brother James as 34. But we know that James should have been aged 36, so how accurate can Peter's statement of his own age be? By his own account, however, Peter was born in 1868. |
