Leitrim Parish of Origin
Where the origin of the person is either "Leitrim" or "Ireland - probably Leitrim" this indicator shows the parish of his or her origin. This is the Catholic Parish in which area the person came from fell, and is used regardless of the religious affiliation of the person.
If a birth or baptismal record of the person has been found, then there is no guesswork involved in assigning the parish of origin. Where these birth details are not known, then some assumptions are made:
- a woman is assumed to come from the parish in which she married
- a man may be assumed to come from the parish in which he is known to have lived
- if siblings of the person came from a particular parish then generally he or she is assumed to hail from the same parish
If there are insufficient grounds for assigning a parish to a person, then he or she is entered as "Leitrim - other or unknown parish".
