Records from Headstones

In this context, please take Headstone as synonymous with Slab, Inscription and other stone memorials.

For the vast majority of people in this data collection, I have as yet made no searches among Headstone and similar memorial records.

For a small number these searches have been made. Interestingly, the dates of death on headstones do not always match exactly those on civil records of deaths, though any differences are usually only of a few days. If a civil death record has been found, then it is taken as the correct date of death, but if not then if there is a date on a headstone this is taken as correct.

In general, burials took place two or three days after death. In some cases, my records will simply give the burial date as 'after' the date of death, but if a specific burial date is known it is entered.

Finally please note that if a person has been found commemorated on a headstone in a particular graveyard, he or she is assumed to be buried there unless there is specific indication to the contrary.
